Itching is not a separate disease but a symptom. One of the most common mistakes owners make is immediately blaming the food. In practice there can be several causes: fleas and other parasites, allergic reactions, skin inflammation, bacterial or fungal infections, irritation after grooming, contact with household chemicals or genuine food intolerance.
It is important to look not only at the fact that the dog is scratching, but at the details. If the pet actively gnaws at the base of the tail, the lower back or the hind legs, flea dermatitis should often be ruled out: even a single bite can cause intense itching in a sensitive dog. If the dog licks its paws, rubs its muzzle, frequently scratches its ears and the skin reddens seasonally or after walks, a reaction to environmental allergens — pollen, dust, mould, grass — is possible. If itching is accompanied by odour, moist patches, crusting, hair loss or skin darkening, a secondary infection may already be present that cannot be resolved simply by changing food.
Food allergy does occur, but it is not as straightforward as it might seem. It cannot be reliably identified from a single observation of "ate something and started scratching". Diagnosis usually requires a strict elimination diet under veterinary supervision: no treats, table scraps or accidental additions. Frequent independent switching of diets can only confuse the picture.
What should the owner do? Do not start treatment at random. Check the regularity of anti-parasite treatments, recall when the itching began, where exactly the dog scratches, and whether there is redness, odour, dandruff, wounds, ear discharge or changes in stool. These details will help the veterinarian identify the cause more quickly.
A visit to the clinic is essential if itching lasts more than a few days, intensifies, disturbs sleep, scratches or bald patches appear, there is an unpleasant odour, ear inflammation or lethargy. The sooner the cause is found, the lower the risk of chronic skin inflammation and recurring flare-ups.
